The Miami Design District is one of my favorite areas of the city. It’s definitely a one-of-a-kind neighborhood that combines luxury shopping, galleries, museums, design stores, restaurants and major art and design installations all within an architecturally significant context.

Starting September 10th, the Miami Design District (MDD) will launch a new cultural initiative open to the public, free guided art tours in the neighborhood. The neighborhood is home to an array of contemporary artworks and beautifully designed, one-of-kind building facades. Throughout the neighborhood’s 18-block area the Miami Design District has curated an amazing selection of public art pieces, from John Baldessari’s “Fun (Part 1)” and “Fun (Part 2)” to Xavier Veilhan’s “Le Corbusier” along with the iconic site-specific Buckminster Fuller Fly’s Eye Dome.

Arts Encounters will be in charge of the twice-a-month free tours. Founded by Margery Gordon, Arts Encounters creates unique experiences that enlighten and connect cultural enthusiasts. As an art critic, journalist and educator active in the development of Miami’s visual arts community for decades, Margery is the perfect guide for a walk through of the Miami Design District sharing her expertise to illuminate the works on view.

There are currently more than 30 works of art to see in the Miami Design District, from centrally located works in public spaces to the not so obvious works living amongst the shops of the MDD. The hour long tours will give visitors a comprehensive look at how art and design elevate and enhance our public spaces.
